Gamned!

Gamned! has been at the forefront of innovation in the marketing industry since 2009. Their work spans ten countries, including Belgium. They were one of the first in the industry to focus on programmatic advertising and their commitment to innovation continues to shine through in their marketing initiatives today.

In 2023, Gamned! launched an entirely new website for French-speaking Belgium and got in touch with Artois Translations to translate this website into Belgian-Dutch (Flemish). Keep reading to find out how Artois Translations tackled the translation and what we came up with.

The brief

The website, privacy policy and general terms and conditions all had to be translated from French into Dutch. Gamned! is renowned for inventive campaigns, so the translation had to reflect this creativity.

I broke the translation process down into six steps:

  • Test translation
  • Briefing session
  • Translation into Dutch
  • Revision of text by a trusted colleague
  • Feedback opportunity
  • In-context review

What made the Artois Translations process stand out for Gamned!

  • Gamned! came to Artois Translations after a bad experience with a previous translator. To reassure them, I suggested I carry out a test translation for them so that they could see upfront whether my translation style was a good fit for their business. I’m pleased to say, we were a great match!
  • We agreed that the translation should contain as few English words as possible in the Dutch translation. Dutch marketing texts can quickly contain a high proportion of English terminology, making them clunky to read. I opted to use Dutch synonyms as much as possible to avoid this.
  • I made sure I checked in with the customer whenever I had any questions. This helped us avoid any potential misunderstandings or misinterpretations. I also spotted a couple of errors in the source text which I passed on.
  • I arranged for the website to be proofread by a copywriter who specialises in marketing, and the general terms and conditions and privacy policy to be proofread by a lawyer-linguist. All the texts I work on are checked by specialists as this ensures I offer the best quality.

I completed all the work in Excel. By adopting this approach, I was able to refer to both the French text and the previous translator’s Dutch. This allowed me to come up with the desired result, which you can see in the third column.

  • After the translation, Gamned! had two weeks to communicate their comments or any changes they wished to make. We added some finishing touches and corrected a couple of errors in the French text.
  • As soon as the translation went live on their website, I thoroughly checked each page as part of the in-context review. I made sure each line of text appeared in exactly the right place, that the titles were the correct length for the space provided, that words were distributed correctly across lines, and that all the links functioned properly. We worked together to dot the i’s and cross the t’s.

The result

Gamned! was over the moon with their new Dutch website 😊
